Yelapa is a very small village situated on the Bay of Banderas, Southwest of
Puerto Vallarta, in Mexico's Jalisco state on the Pacific ocean. Its origins as a
tranquil Mexican fishing village remain.
There are no permanent roads leading to Yelapa, only a jeep path not suitable for regular travel. Everyone and everything comes to the village by
boat.

Where is Yelapa, Mexico?
Just south of Puerto Vallarta, in Mexico's Jalisco state, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Less than four hours by air from San Francisco, Yelapa is a traditional Mexican fishing village which has retained it's old-world charm and beauty. There are NO ROADS in Yelapa! Everyone and everything comes to the village by boat. It's a gorgeous getaway and a perfect spot for the Drum Camp.
How do I get to Yelapa, Mexico?
The nearby city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, has a bustling international airport with daily flights from around the world. It's less than four hours from San Francisco. Once you arrive, you'll take a bus (15 mins.) and then a boat to Yelapa (30 mins). Full details will be provided once you sign-up. It's a very easy and common route. (Round trip airfare from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta is
approximately $420 with advance purchase.)
What styles of drumming will be taught?
Lots! Seminal W. African rhythms from Guinee and Nigeria. Folkloric rumba, bembe,
iyesa and makuta from Cuba, Brazilian samba and ijexa, along with contemporary beats
from Havana, Rio, Salvador Bahia and Brooklyn! A great mix of traditional arrangements and modern music.
Can any drummers join, regardless of playing experience?
Yes. The Drum Camp in Mexico is open to all drummers. More experienced drummers
will be taught more advanced rhythms, newer drummers the basics. There will be rewarding and challenging material for ALL levels, including full arrangements of traditional West African, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms.
Will drums be provided?
No. Each attendees is requested to bring one drum (djembe, conga, ashiko ...) and one supporting percussion instrument (cowbell, agogo, caxixi, clave...). All instruments will be shared by attendees for ensemble playing.
Will there be drum jams?
Yes, drum classes end at 6:30pm daily and students are free to jam until 10pm at night. Plus, on two nights during the week we will have a BONFIRE DRUM JAM on the beach.
What are the accommodations like?
Beautiful open-air "palapas" in the jungle. Fully furnished, nicely appointed, with clean, comfortable beds, full kitchens, living rooms, hot water and showers.
Will I share a room with another Camp attendee?
Maybe. It depends on the total number of attendees.
Will food be provided?
Yes! An outstanding Mexican chef from Yelapa will be providing three delicious & nourishing meals a day. Or, depending on the group's preference, we may sample some of the outstanding local restaurants instead (no extra charge for group meal).
Are there other activities in Yelapa if I don't want to take the drum classes every day?
Yes! Morning yoga is offered (included in Camp price). Yelapa is a natural paradise with swimming, kayaking, hiking, fishing, hang-gliding, horseback riding, dolphin and whale watching available daily, within walking distance of Camp accommodations (these activities, if they require a fee, are not included in Camp price). Yelapa also has a collection of outstanding restaurants and cafes.
